Louisiana deputy's wife accused in his death
GRETNA, La. (AP) — The wife of a Louisiana sheriff’s deputy has been arrested on a second-degree murder charge in his death.
News outlets report 35-year-old Shantel Wagner, of Waggaman, is accused of killing Jefferson Parish sheriff’s Sgt. Troy Smith, an instructor and hostage negotiator.
Wagner called 911 on Father’s Day around 11:25 p.m. and reported Smith had tried to commit suicide in the bedroom of their home. Smith remained hospitalized for about a week before succumbing to his injuries. He was 44 years old.
Department spokesman Lt. Jason Rivarde says detectives determined through forensic evidence and interviews that Smith’s injury wasn’t self-inflicted and arrested Wagner about 1 a.m. Wednesday. She faces one count of second-degree murder. It was unknown if she’s represented by an attorney.
The couple had been married since 2016.
